Family Deities (Kula Thievangal) Dear Nagarathars we have already given particulars about the NINE temples belonging to our clans with the names of the deities and the pictures
As our community has been praised by the entire world for the services rendered to the religious cause we not only have the above NINE temples but also have renovated and continue to maintain various temples
1, We have built various temples in all our native towns.
They are for Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesa, Lord Muruga, Lord Venkateswara, Lord Ayyanar Goddess Durgai, Goddess Mariamman , etc
One can feast upon his/ her eyes in the beauty of these temples in the small and big towns of Chettinadu. Invariable big and small tanks are built in these temples
2. Besides this the chettiars have a tradition of worshipping their family deities which are called "Kula Deivams"
All the Kula Deivam temples are built in small hamlets . It is an wonder to note that these hamlets are not the abode of the community. Chettiars visit these Kula Deivam temples during festivals or according to their convenience or before or after a wedding in the family.
Normally the new-born baby is baptised in these Kula deivam temples . He /she is fed with rice which ceremony is called " Choru Uttuthal" meaning feeding with rice
3. The service to the religion and temples do not confine with the native towns, villages , and Kula Deivam temples but also spread far and wide to the following places:
a) Tanjavore District _ Tanjavore district got magnificent donations for their renewals
b) Madurai District
c) Chidambaram
d) Thiruvannamalai
4. Temples in places of migration: It is worthy to note that Chettiars were not tired of building temples in the places and countries they migrated.
In all the places where they settled for their business inside India either they have built temples or have donated profusely for certain "Kala Poojas"*
* One such pooja is being conducted by Chettiars in the Kasi Viswanathar temple Varanasi even today.
They used to go on pilgrimage for these temples and that is the reason for their building choultries in all the temple towns. It provided easy and cheap facility for stay.
They had built beautiful temples in all the countries like Burma , Malaysia, Singapore Ceylon, Thailand, Siam , Indonesia where they settled for business.
In the modern times the chettiars who have settled in countries like UK, USA, have also built many temples in various cities .
As it has been rightly said by Thavaththiru Kundrakudi Adigalar " Ngarathars cannot live in any country without building a Hindu temple leave alone their native region
The religions of all the above countries are different: They are Christianity, Islam, Buddihsm etc.
