Points of Interest

The name comes from the iluppai trees which grow in abundance in this area.

The temple's origin, according to Puranic legend, comes from a request by Siva, who appeared in a dreram to a local chieftain. The chieftan was presented with a soodamani, a precious stone, by Siva for building the temple. The nearby village is known as Soodamanipuram for this reason.

The lingam here is a natural one, meaning not shaped by man.

Bhairavar is a special diety here, much worshipped in the locality.

Location 5 kms from Karaikkudi.
